The scale of Greece’s crushing economic crisis and unrelenting austerity measures is showing in how many people are fleeing the country in search of work and a better life elsewhere, particularly Germany.
The number of Greek immigrants to Germany soared 43 percent in 2012, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, which saw a 13 percent jump in immigrants, mostly from across Europe.
Some 45 percent more Spaniards moved to Germany. Spain, like Greece, is suffering record unemployment. Correspondingly, the same figures reached an increase of 43 percent for Portugal and 40 percent for Italy.
Most new immigrants to Germany come from Poland while a sizeable increase was recorded from the countries that entered EU in 2004 and 2007, mainly from Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The favorite choices for resettlement were Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden Württemberg.
