5BE25A7C930B6F914CC5C8DF8F9DBBB4Greek director Ektoras Lygizos has been awarded in the tenth Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz, which took place in the Austrian city of Linz. He won the first prize (CROSSING EUROPE AWARD European Competition) and €10,000 for his film, Boy Eating the Bird’s Food.

Crossing Europe Festival took place on April 23-29 and attracted more than 20,000 visitors. It devoted its program to willful, contemporary and sociopolitical auteur cinema from Europe. It offered around 140 outstanding feature films, documentaries and short films to international guests and local cinema audiences.

As the jury stressed out, their decision to award Lygizos’ film was that it deals with the problems of social realism at an unknown until now level.

The film, Boy Eating the Bird’s Food has already been awarded in festivals as Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Seville European Film Festival, as well as more recently in the Hellenic Film Academy (HFA), where it was chosen as the Best Film of the year.

His latest, film Boy Eating the Bird’s Food, had its world premiere in Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. In the film the main character Yorgos (Giannis Papadopoulos) is an educated young man estranged from friends and family whose only companion is his chirpy pet canary. Unemployed, penniless and eventually evicted from his rundown apartment, Yorgos is dominated by a single, overriding drive: hunger.

Lygizos was born in Athens in 1976, where he studied philology and film directing in the Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos. He has directed a series of theatrical performances; he has written and directed short films as Pure Youth (Agna Niata).
