Alkinoos Ioannidis’s Concert in Berlin

images (1)The well-loved songwriter and performer Alkinoos Ioannidis gave a concert on April 25 in Passionskirche in Berlin. Ioannidis performed with Yiorgos Kaloudis, a cello and Cretan lyre virtuoso.

Ioannidis performed his own songs as well as songs written by Nikos Zoudiaris with whom he has worked since the beginning of his career. Among the audience there were many German fans of the Cypriot songwriter, who did not forget to sing some Cypriot traditional songs.

Athough as Ioannidis stressed, he has never sung in a concert organized by a political party, he is very interested in politics. During his concert in Berlin he talked about “a new type of racism”, which is developing in Europe “against the people of the southern countries who are all thieves and gangsters.” He said this image is constructed and conserved by the media around Europe, which are part of the problem and have divided the peoples for decades.

“I am not a politician but we have to decide whether we like this Europe or not, the people’s savings are stolen in cold blood, pupils faint because of starvation at school and patients die in the hospitals, because the necessary means to save then don’t exist.” He added: “If this is not the Europe that we dreamed about, then we must all together and every one individually build and make  the Europe that we dream of a reality.”

Talking about his personal experiences and first memories which involved the Turkish invasion in Cyprus, Ioannidis underlined the need not to take peace for granted even today.
