Ioannidis Sings For EU Harmony

ioannidis_smallThe Viennese and Greeks who live in Vienna applauded Alkinoos Ioannidis in his first concert on April 21 in the Austrian capital. The Cypriot singer, songwriter and composer, sang at the Akzent Theater of Vienna, before an enthusiastic audience the majority of whom were Austrians. The concert was organized by the Social and Cultural Association of the Greek Community of Vienna in cooperation with the Labor Center of Austria.

The concert was attended by the ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Austria, Costas Papadimas, as well as by Maria Vasilakou, the Greek vice mayor of Vienna.

Ioannidis sang and played the guitar and the lute accompanied by George Kaloudis, a Cretan lyre and cello virtuoso. Ioannidis presented versions of his songs, as well as a series of traditional Cypriot songs and three Manos Hatzidakis compositions.

In the middle of the concert Ioannidis addressed the audience and spoke of Europe 2013. “In the Europe of 2013,” he said, “the politicians and the media of each country, the same who let the corruption and insecurity grow strong and always served their own interests, now teach the people of their countries to blame each other. So a new racism is being created among Europeans, where each country believes that if it blames the other it will save itself, but its turn will come only if there is no one around to support him.”

Wondering if this was the Europe that its people dreamed of, Ioannides stressed that if the people of Europe decide that they want to belong to the same family, they will have to look each other in the eyes in order to understand, to sympathize, to forgive and to organize their home all together.
