German Diaspora Sends Medicine to Greece

farmakaThe Greek Diaspora in Germany has showed its tangible expression of solidarity to the homeland during this difficult crisis period.

Greeks living in Solingen in the North-Rhine-Westphalia, collected medicine for a hospital in Karpenisi and for the health center of Mytilene’s Metropolis. They also boosted the Association of Edessa’s Cancer Patients in its effort to collect medicine for the Theageneio Hospital of Thessaloniki.

This action has been organized by the Greek Orthodox Church, the community and restaurant owners of Greek descent with the initiative of Solingen’s municipal councilor, Ioanna Zacharaki, who comes from the Greek town of Kalambaka and has been living in Germany for 31 years.

Zacharaki pointed out that German hospitals, pharmacies, German and Greek doctors and German business associations offered their help. She said that the migration movement from Greece to Germany should be very well prepared.

“People back home need to understand that Germany is not the Promised Land. There are many difficulties that aren’t apparent when you’re looking at the situation from a distance. People shouldn’t just get up and leave without any preparation or some rudimentary tools”, Zacharaki added.

The migration expert stressed out that many are the Greeks who leave their country seeking a better future in Germany, but do not manage to find a job. “We are obliged to pay for the hotel and buy them tickets back to Greece”, she reported.

Zacharaki and other Greeks in Germany receive, on a daily basis, dozens of calls and e-mails from Greeks that want to work in Germany.  She talked about the importance of speaking German: “Without German they will never be able to assimilate. If they don’t know the language they must first invest in classes. But many don’t want to get involved in this process. They believe that they will find work in some Greek restaurant and their lives will continue as before. Unfortunately, there are just not that many Greek restaurants in Germany.”

People who have better chances are doctors, engineers, educators, nurses and professionals from other areas in which there is a shortage in Germany.
