Greek Children Not Well Off, But Happy

images67The United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, conducted a research among the 29 wealthier countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that shows Greek children rank 25th in well-being, but 5th in a happiness index.

The result showed that children in The Netherlands was the leader in treating children, followed by four Scandinavian countries, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Sweden followed.

All the countries in the top 10 were western European nations. Britain ranked 16th and Canada 17th. The United States was in 26th place, followed by Lithuania, Latvia and Romania. As reported by UNICEF, in these three last countries, children have many problems to face.

The Child Well-Being in Rich Countries: A Comparative Overview, is the second report of this kind done by UNICEF and covers children up to age 19. The first one was released in 2007 and looked at a variety of indicators in areas ranging from health to education using data from 2000 to 2003. The 2013 report looks at figures from 2009 to 2010, according to the Dutch Daily News.

The study measures development according to five dimensions of children’s lives. These are the material well-being, health and safety, education, behavior and risks, and housing and environment in the countries in question. Oddly, some children who rank high in well-being aren’t very happy, with Germans at 22nd, Americans at 23d, and those in Romania, Poland and Lithuania are the most unhappy as well.
