395px-Nike_of_Samothrake_Louvre_Ma2369_n4Jean-Luc Martinez is the new director of the Louvre museum in Paris. The 49-year-old French is a specialist in Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. This year Martinez is leading the restoration of one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, which has been prominently displayed at the Louvre since 1884.

Martinez, appointed by Francois Hollande, will be chief of the most visited museum in the world for three years. He replaced Henri Loyrette, who had been in the post since 2001.

Martinez has worked at the Louvre since 2007, and has played his part in the establishment of Louvre-Lens, the branch of the Louvre in the industrial city of Lens, in Northern France, which displays objects from the collections of the Louvre, as well as in the establishment of the Abu Dhabi Louvre.
