Mezzo-soprano Giannoulidou in Vienna

0The rising Greek mezzo-soprano Elsa Giannoulidou participated in a concert of religious  music held in Vienna, on the occasion of the Holy Week of the Catholic Easter, where she sang the sacred work Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

The event was held under the auspices of the general music director of the renowned Vienna State Opera, Franz Velzer-mest during which Giannoulidou was accompanied by a string quartet, the church organ and Austrian soprano Regine Hangler, under the direction of Wolfgang Capek.

Stabat Mater is the title of a thirteenth-century Latin hymn and it means “the Mother was standing.” It is one of Pergolesi’s most celebrated works, which achieved great popularity after the composer’s death

It has also become a source of inspiration for many composers of different eras. It was the last work of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) which is considered to be the most beautiful hymn because of the simplicity and directness of emotion.

The famous Augustinian Church in Vienna, which is a parish church located on Josefsplatz next to the Hofburg, where the concert took place, maintains a 600 years tradition  in church music, having hosted the performances of world-premiere works of many renowned composers such as Anton Bruckner, Franz Schubert, Beethoven’s pupil, Johann Georg and of many others as well.
