MEP Papastamkos Faints During EP Session

papastamkos.limghandlerGiorgos Papastamkos, Vice-President of the European Parliament, fainted on March 13  during a plenary session. The voting session was about amendments in Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The debate was severe as CAP is the single largest recipient of the EU  budget. Traditionally, countries of the South with vast agricultural population want to keep it vivid, while countries of the North want to cut money from CAP and make it more efficient.

After almost 200 amendments had been debated, Papastamkos asked the session to pause for a while and a few seconds later he collapsed while he was trying to rise from his seat.. Three MEP’s who are doctors tried to bring him around. Currently he is in a hospital in Strasbourg, France, where the plenary sessions of the EP take place. Greek MEP Aggourakis from KKE, the Communist Party of Greece, who accompanied him to the hospital, complained about the tension and the stress MEP’s and employees are under during the EP plenary sessions.

After Papastamkos fainted, Martin Schultz, the German President of the EP announced that his situation is critical and an update will follow as soon as possible. Papastamkos was elected with New Democracy in the last elections for the European Parliament in 2009. Before that he had served as Deputy Minister of Finance, and as professor in the School of International and European Studies in the University of Piraeus. He holds a PhD in Law and his research track has mostly focused on European Integration and European Law.
