The Cultural Center of the Greek Community of Berlin is under threat to shut down, as the city’s government has decided to stop financing its operation by the end of March 2013.
The President of the center, Kiriakos Fotiadis, told the Der Tagesspiegel newspaper that talks with the authorities had not been successful in saving the center nor 14 other similar Greek associations in the city who won’t have funding any more either.
The newspaper said the cith was putting up the equivalent of 40,000 euros annually for 20 years and that was in addition to other funds the center was getting. The facility operated a self-help operation for Greeks living in Berlin as well as language courses, event and seminars and other activities.
