Despite Crisis, Greek Clothing Costs High

Given the huge economic crisis that Greece is struggling with, price escalation has been observed in key categories of everyday life such as food.

The opposite however, seems to be happening  as far as clothing and footwear prices are concerned where those industries are jacking up prices in many cases, although Greece is one of its two annual sales periods where substantial discounts are being offered in many stores.

The European Union’s statistics agency, Eurostat, found that Greek clothing and footwear remain the most expensive within the EU by far.

The only period during which prices are lowered are the sales periods, where reductions of 28% – 30% on average are being promoted, far more than across the EU, where it averages about 14 percent. The government is considering expanding the sales periods as well as allowing Sunday openings.
