Bourzi Conducts Herself In Greek, German

5973afd2ded6511ffe3e614ed779a4d3Composter Constantia Gourzi, the only female conductor teaching at the German Music University is preparing a concert entitled Greek Music in German in collaboration with four international young composers and four international young conductors.

She is proposing Greek tunes to the conductors so that they can get inspired to create their own musical pieces. “My intention is to help the audience to remember Greece for its culture. It is a unity of nations away from politics and crisis,” she told the Greek news agency AMNA. The performance begins on Jan. 30 in Munich.

From 1987 to 2007 she lived in West Berlin, where she pursued her studies on Orchestral Conducting and Composition at Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste.) She lives in Munich.  Vassilis Christopoulos, conductor of the Greek National Orchestra, has given her a new musical piece, which is going to be presented on March 7 at Athens Music Hall. She dedicated this composition to Greek soprano Maria Callas. Gourzi said she not forget Greece, her homeland, though, she feels like a “citizen of all the world.”
