British Academic Says Alexander Crossdresser

20121128CMilennia after he conquered the then-known world, Alexander the Great’s legacy is still being debated and now an academic from Newcastle University, in a lecture at the British Museum, said the the great Greek was bisexual, a notion that has been raised before.

Alexander the Great: Cross-Dressing Conquerer Of The World? was the topic of the remarks by Professor Tony Spawforth from Newcastle University. The idea of Alexander’s sexuality was brought up in Oliver Stone’s 2004 epic film about the conqueror.

According to the British Museum website, Spawforth talked “about the claims that the Macedonian ruler liked to dress as a Greek goddess, using evidence from the Museum’s collection and the controlled misreading of his use of imagery by contemporaries.”

In the past, Spawforth had argued that Alexander even liked dressing up like Persians after he had defeated them. His lecture drew a sold-out audience.
