More Greeks Seek New Life On Cyprus

image001The number of Greeks moving to Cyprus has increased some 40% over the last year, with 51,106 living on the island now compared to 35,000 a year before.

According to the newspaper Fileleftheros, after Cyprus joined the European Union, many Pontiac Greeks had also come in search of a better future, but when the financial crisis began many of them left.

An increase was observed in arrivals from Bulgaria as well and there are now 42, 469 of them on Cyprus. Next come Romanians at 39,344 and Britons with 35,129 residents. There could also be more than 50,000 Russians, official estimate.

The figures come from the Civil Registry and Migration Department. that showed about 200,000 Europeans living on Cyprus, up about 7,000 in one year.
