Germany Raises 500M Euros for Greek Children

More than 500 million euros have been collected by the program Helping the Children of Greece, announced last June both by Germany’s bishop Augustine and the Bavarian Minister for Family and Social Affairs, Christine Haderthauer.

Among the deposits made was 80 million euros by the Holy Metropolis of Germany and  200 million euros by the Sternstunden Institute of the Bavarian Television. Among several great Bavarian companies and organizations which showed their interest in sponsoring this financial aid program, was the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria that will deposit  70 million euros.
This initiative touched the Greek community of Munich, which also wanted to collect money to help needy families. As part of the charity effort, a large music event was held in the music hall of Munich Nov. 29, hosting Vicky Leandros and the famous German musician and actor Miro Nemetz. As a result, 170 million euros was collected. Minister for the Interior Stylianidis, along with Haderthauer also attended the event.

Others present were the Presidents of the Bavarian Constitutional Court, the Munich Court, the Bavarian General Media Institute, Consul General of Greece, Sofia Grammata, the Turkish Consul General, Mr. Eris, the assistant bishop of the Evangelical Church of Bavaria, as well as many other representatives of Greek organizations in Munich.
