Jazz Man Vasilakis Plays in London

One of the best-known Greek saxophone players, with an international career, Dimitri Vassilakis will give three concerts in the British capital as part of the London Jazz Festival. They included appearances on Nov. 15 at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and Nov. 17 at Artsdepot, a club in the North of the British capital.

It is the first time that Greek artist would appear at Scott’s club, one of the best-known in the country an Europe. Vassilakis was given the role of host, making his appearance more special.

During the program, Jazz in Europe, prominent artists from across the old continent will play in different parts of the city in order to bring closer the communities. It is like a small tour in London. The presentation of Vassilakis was set up by the Greek Culture Foundation.

Vasilakis has recorded four albums for the historic Candid Label  in London. Labyrinth was voted the second-best jazz album of the year in a BBC Internet poll and was album of the month March 2002 for BBC Music Magazine.

He has played all around the globe, notably at Birdland N.Y; Yale, the Natural History Museum in Washington D.C. for the Smithsonian Institute and Jazz appreciation month, the Onassis Cultural Center in New York; Sweet Rhythm and Zinc New York, London Jazz Festival Royal Festival Hall, South Africa Tour and major festivals in Europe and the Balkans, while reviewers refer to him as the Greek god of jazz.

Has played and recorded among others with: Jeff “Tain” Watts, Dave Liebman, Marc Johnson, Abdullah Ibrahim, Essiet Essiet, Jamie Cullum, Adam Nussbaum, Theodosii Spassov, Ralph Peterson, Andy Sheppard, Milcho Leviev, Ron Affif, and Juliet Kelly.

Has performed for two Greek presidents and former U.S. President Bill Clinton. In Greece he has appeared at the Athens Festival, City Of Athens Jazz Festival, Delphic Games, Fringe Festival, Athens 2004, and many concert halls and theaters, including Herodion, Lycabettus, Megaron,Pallas  Theatre etc.

He, also, has taught at the Athens and Macedonia Universities and has presented seminars at Queens, Skidmore, DePaul, Royal Academy Of Music in London, Paris Conservatoire, among others.
