Young Greeks Win Sciacca Awards

The Pontifical University Urbaniana in the Vatican hosted this year’s International Giuseppe Sciacca Awards celebrating the efforts of young people (aged between 18 and 35 years old) to contribute to the society and provide an example for the future generations.

The 11th Awards ceremony presented awards to people of arts, sports, science, culture and social services, and among the recipients were this year several Greeks and Greek Cypriots.

The Special Award for Archaeology was presented to archaeologist and director of the excavation and restoration works in Anceint Messini, Professor Petros Themelis.

The founder and President of  The Ark of the World Father Antonios Papanikolaou was presented with the Award of Social Services for the unconditional support the NGO offers to children facing abandonment, racism and social exclusion and families that have economic difficulties.

Greek Cypriot first Olympic medal winner Pavlos Kontides was presented with the Sports Award for his excellence in the London Olympics 2012.

Georgios-Nektarios Delis, a 17-year-old student, was granted the Maria Grazia Balducci Rossiο Award of Social Awareness and Volunteering. Τhe young basketball athlete was presented his award by famous basketball star Claudio Coldebella, who congatulated young Delis for his dedication to sports and his ethics. Delis is considered to be a rising basketball star.

Τhe Overall Award (Premio Assoluto) was presented to 11-year old US athelete Cody McCasland, suffering from a rare degenerative disease (sacral agenesis) but is facing life with much determination and optimism.
