German Neo-Nazi Arrested in Murder of Greek

German prosecutors have charged a woman, with the murders of 10 people, a Greek among them. The woman is the third person believed to be in the National Socialist Underground, a neo-Nazi group who operated from 2000 to 2007.

The murders caused anxiety in Germany, as accusations rose that the secret services had not paid close attention to the group.

The cell was discovered in 2011, when the third member of the cell, Beate Zschaepe, blew up an apartment while preparing a bomb. Now she faces life imprisonment if found guilty. The other two members of the cell, Uwe Mundlos, 38, and Uwe Boenhardt, 34, were discovered dead in a caravan in an apparent double suicide.

The cell is also the main suspect in the killings of  eight Turkish immigrants and a female police officer in 2007 and for an explosion on a busy street in Cologne. Prosecutors said the group wanted to create a state of fear in immigrants so they would leave Germany. Initially the victims have been charged in inter-gang rivalry.

The incident has caused great distrust in the way the intelligence services cope with racist crimes. Both the governing parties, the CDU/CSU (Coservative) and the SPD (Social Democrats) have acknowledged that a reform in the way intelligence services work is necessary.
