Austria Says Greek Tourism Not So Bad

According to a report on Austrian Public Broadcasting, Greek tourism seems to have rebounded a bit from projections in the spring, during uncertainty over elections, and will finish the year better than expected.

Revenues are still expected to be down about 3.5 percent with a reduction in tourist numbers of about 6 percent, but both of those are better than expected as tourists seemed to overlook political uncertainty and a crushing economic crisis to come anyway, particularly in the summer.

The report also noted that the National Bank of Greece said that Greeks are returning deposits to the country’s beleaguered banks instead of withdrawing them despite continued uncertainty over the effect of yet another round of austerity measures, but some hotel owners and others involved in tourism think the situation is worse than the numbers show.
