Y. Tloupas: Greek Man Launches Magazine about Every Man’s Passions- Women and Fast Cars

Yorgo Tloupas of Greek descent is the inspirer, co-founder and art director of the car magazine called Intersection. This magazine is published in 13 countries all over the world and has its own fan base thanks to its special design and high artistic quality.

“I love Greece- it’s my favourite country. My greatest influences to become an art designer was my father- he was a sculptor (at the current time he is preparing an exhibition at the Modern Art Museum in Thessaloniki) and my mother who was teaching design. As for the car itself, it was not part of my childhood since my family was not so interested in cars. However, my mother had given me a small sports car, a ‘Triumph Spitfire’,” comments Mr Tloupas. He now owns a Honda Prelude, model year 1981 but his favourite sports have nothing in common with cars. Yorgo Tloupas skates a lot as well as plays bike polo.

He came up with the Intersection idea when he was in Paris, where he lived back then. He intended to launch it in France but “the timing was not perfect,” he comments. As a result, he moved to London where he found willing co-partners and published the first issues in 2002.

In the UK he found his supporters- famous British photographer Rankin and marketing director Dan Ros, both working for Dazed & Confused magazine. These two men along with Yorgo Tloupas are the Intersection co-founders. “Rankin had too much power, a feature that usually makes me feel uncomfortable. But he didn’t scare me away because he was always very kind to me. When he heard my idea about the magazine he told me that ‘it’s the best idea I’ve heard in years. Let’s do it’, ” continued the Greek art designer.

Tloupas’ vision was to create a magazine which would “write about cars in an alternative way- an approach more aesthetic, cultural, artistic, not a technical one” and he has done it rather well, it appears.

Intersection deals with fashion, design, travel, always surrounding its main focus, cars. You don’t have to be a specialist to read this magazine despite it is reputation as the most ‘delicate’ magazine about cars. Editors of Intersection write about women participating in races, Karl Lagerfeld’s car collection, trips to fascinating places on four wheels but also pretty women.

It is published in the USA, the UK, Australia, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, the UAE. There is also a French edition launched in France, Morocco and Belgium. In the Belgium edition, readers have the opportunity to read features in Flemish as well. The magazine is about to enter Chinese and Russian markets soon (by the end of 2012) while the three co-founders of Intersection are also planning to run a Japanese edition too.
