Eve Geroulis: “What are we teaching kids?”

The Marie Curie Fellowship Conference was held in Brussels, Flagey on July 3rd. Most of the speakers were former and present Fellows presenting their point of view on innovation, technology, success and creativity in a TED-style event.

The majority of speakers live in Europe, while many of them live abroad, most of them in the US. The event started with speeches by Wolfgang Burtscher, Deputy-Director General of Research and Innovation, European Commission and Maire Geoghegan, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science.

A distinguished Greek-American marketer and educator,Eve Geroulis, started her speech soon after with the title “What are we teaching kids?” Her speech was focused on the core of education and what it should be. Listening to her, after spending five years studying higher education, seminars and conferences was really fascinating. I always thought that education is not only about transmitting information or teaching someone how to learn. It is also about creating stable, good, sincere character. I was really thrilled to see that I was not the only one who still believed this.

Geroulis pointed out that a clear example of the success of education is the Occupy movement. Mainly young people, who are fed up with continuous austerity and lack of opportunities,, are standing up against authority to claim a better future.

As she underlined in her speech, her favorite President, Abraham Lincoln, said that “We must create an excellence of achievers in a democracy of opportunities” while passing legislation for public education.

Geroulis also talked about the future and how education should change. Her remarks were mainly that education should not only be about knowledge and skills, but also about morality, principles, ideas that change and shape the world and creativity.
