Nikos Pilos Showcases Greek Rage at 2012 Berlin Browse Fotofestival

Prominent Greek photo-journalist Nikos Pilos will be presenting his latest work at this year’s Browse Fotofestival in Berlin, Germany. With many years of experience behind him, the awarded photo-journalist has travelled the world capturing wars, conflicts and human hatred through his camera lens.

Now that the crisis has taken over Greece, he does not need to travel anymore, he told Reuters. “It is ironic. Before the crisis, I used to spend eight months of the year travelling to places like Iraq, Lebanon and Pakistan. Now I don’t need to leave Athens,” Pilos said.

Violence, social turmoil, rage and despair are daily occurrences in the Greek capital for the past few years. Ever since the crisis broke out, Pilos has been staying in Athens aiming at capturing the feeling of the Greek people amidst recession and austerity measures.

The Greek parliament, the riot police clashing with far-leftists and the Syntagma Christmas tree on fire are some of the many black-and-white photos showcased at the Berlin festival until June 30.

Pilos also told Reuters that he has been attacked three times while working on the streets of Athens. “I have been to so many war zones, but the only time I have ever been beaten was in Greece, once by anarchists and twice by the police. I spent 100 days in Iraq (in 2004-05) and have worked in Lebanon and in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and always came through without a scratch,” he said.

Pilos explained that the Greek people do not hate the Germans in contrast to the negative media reports presenting Greece as a dangerous land. Moreover, he clarified that Friday’s Euro match between Greece and Germany should be only regarded as a football game. However, he added that the German Chancellor will be attending the sports event because she is probably expecting her country “to win and celebrate another victory over Greece”.
