“Europe owes Greece the foundations of the European spirit and it’s a shame to talk about Greeks with such superficiality and irresponsibility,” noted the Viennese Archbishop Christoph Cardinal Schönborn last night during his speech in the framework of the solidarity events titled “We are all Greeks.”
Schönborn, the highest representative of the Austrian Catholic Church, visited the historical Greek community in the centre of Vienna to express his sympathy towards the Greek people. In his speech, he also reminded that Greeks were the first to embrace Christianity and helped it spread all across Europe. Solidarity is what the Bible asks for, he pointed out adding that “We are all Greeks.”
Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Middle Europe Arsenios referred to the incomparable Greek hospitality and the people’s willingness to joy even in times of pain in his address to the hundreds of attendees.
The event lasted till late Sunday night on Greeks Street and the square located between the two traditional Greek-Orthodox churches of Vienna, the church of the Holy Trinity and Saint George.
The event was marked by Hellenic elements, as Greek restaurants of the area offered Greek specialties and Greek music played all day long.
