Russian Church Donates 500,000 Euros to Archdiocese of Athens

The Russian church raised approximately 19 million Rubles, meaning almost 500,000 Euros, in order to help the poor and homeless people of Greece.

According to the official website of the Department for Charity and Social Ministry of the Russian Orthodox Church (http://www.diaconia.ru), which coordinates the Church Social Projects Support, the sum of approximately 500,000 Euros was collected up till May 22 from charities of the churches and monasteries, as well as individuals who followed the calling of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia last January.

The fundraiser started February 19, 2012, following a written decision that had been sent to the churches and monasteries of the Patriarchate across the country.

The donations that amounted 100-400 rubles did not only come from people of the cities, but also people who lived in remote regions or even abroad, explains the Chief Financial Officer of the Department for Charity and Social Ministry of the Russian Orthodox Church Konstantin Basilov.

The donation sum will be given for the rations of the Archdiocese of Athens.
