Mitakis Wins First European Finn Title in Style

Vasilij Zbogar, Ioannis Mitakis and Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic on the podium

The Finn European Open and Junior titles of the Finn European Championships were decided today in the Gulf of Follonica, Italy, after a week of tough, tricky racing in unusually light and shifty winds and a former Junior champion has emerged as the dark horse winner.
Yesterday’s overall leader, Ioannis Mitakis (GRE), took the title in style after leading the Medal Race from start to finish. Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) took Silver with Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) taking Bronze.
In the race for the Junior title, Michal Jodlowski (POL), who has led all week, took the title from Dimitar Vangelov (BUL) and Andrey Yanitsky (RUS).

This is the first time Ioannis Mitakis has won the Finn European title, or any major Open Finn title, just two years after he won the Junior Finn European title for the second time. For the 23 year old, it is a dream come true, and, for others, unexpected.
All week the light winds have favoured the Greek and he has demonstrated a level headedness and clear strategic thinking that has left many more experienced rivals in his wake.
