French Demonstrators Provide Support to Greece

French demonstrators have taken to the streets of Paris to express solidarity with the economically-weakened Greek nation, Press TV reports.

“The French people do not forget them… this is the flag of France and not the flag of Mr. Sarkozy,” a female protester said on Saturday.

The rally was held in response to an international call by various groups for solidarity with the Greek people in capital cities around the world.

The Greek parliament approved a bill on austerity measures early on Monday in return for a new eurozone bailout, worth 130 billion euros, from international loan providers.

The controversial bill provoked violent protests and clashes between angry demonstrators with riot police in the crisis-stricken country.

The latest measures include 300 million euros in pension cuts and a 22 percent reduction in minimum wages from about 750 euros a month.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is increasingly under fire for marching in lockstep with Germany even though southern Europe is paying significantly for Europe’s financial crisis.

Prominent French leftists have accused EU leaders of “cowardice” as “Athens is burning”, and even conservative politicians openly side with the Greek people.

“We are joking with friends that Angela Merkel is our leader. Merkel unfairly blames the Greek people for their situation. Sarkozy pretends to resist her, but we know that in the end he will do what she wants,” another protester said.

The French leader has imposed unprecedented budget cuts, and many in France say they will opt for the Greek approach if more austerity is demanded.
