Greece Remains Amidst Top Tourist Destinations for Austrians, But Not For Germans

Despite the Greek debt crisis and the constant strikes, Austrian tourists remain fans of the attractions of the Mediterranean country, unlike the Germans, reported a recent study conducted by the “Foundation for Future Matters” of the Technical University of Salzburg and published Monday by the daily newspaper “Wiener Zeitung”.

According to the study’s findings, 6% of the Austrian population passed their last year’s main vacations (including at least 5 night stays) in Greece, which is only slightly lower than 2010. For 2012, 5.4% of survey takers are already planning a trip to Greece, which equates to some 450,000 tourists.

According to Austrian statistics, Greece ranks high as a tourist destination in the preferences of the Austrians. This year Greece made it to fifth place, following Austria, Italy, Croatia and Turkey.

Unlike Austrian tourists, Germans show less willingness to travel to Greece, with only 2% passing their last year’s main vacations in the country. For 2012, this percentage is expected to fall even lower given the anti-German sentiment spreading in recession-hit Greece.

In their recent statements to the Austrian daily “Kurier”, the representatives of the travel agencies of Austria called on Greek hotel owners to drop their prices in order to reverse the negative course of bookings.

Austria has for years ranked in first place regarding tourist arrivals in Greece.
