Lakis Vingas Re-Εlected as Minorities’ Representative at Turkish VGM

The General Assembly of the General Directorate for Foundations (VGM) elected its five members to represent the communal (cemaat), new (yeni) and connected (mulhak) foundations for 2011-2014 last Sunday, December 25.

150 candidates from 162 foundations have filed a participation application in this year’s elections. From the total number, 149 foundations managed to sent their representative in Ankara.

Mr. Lakis Vingas was reelected for the second time in a row to serve for three years as a representative of the minorities’ foundations in the 15-members Council of the General Assembly of the VGM based in Ankara.

From the Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Jacobite Syrians, Bulgarian and Georgian minorities 2 candidates run for the elections. From the total 149 minority foundations, Greek born Mr. Vingas beat his Armenian opponent Mr. Iskernder Sahingoz with 105 votes to 44. Mr. Sahingoz is the standby member to represent minorities in the VGM.

The majority of the minorities’ delegates voted for Mr. Vingas, who has been representing all minorities’ rights across Turkey, from Istanbul to Imvros and Tenedos to Diyarbakir.

Before the 2008 elections, the minorities had agreed that for the first three years period they would be represented by the Greek Orthodox minority, with the Armenian and Jewish minority following at the coming elections. However, the Armenian side did not reach an agreement on who their candidate for the 2011 elections would be, and Mr. Vingas was, therefore, the best possible solution.
