Archbishop of Athens Leronymos’ Official Visit to Cyprus

“It’s high time we all said no to the Cyprus occupation and show respect for human rights recognized by the UN” said Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Ieronymos after meeting with Cyprus President Mr. Christofias.

His Eminence Ieronymos arrived Thursday in Cyprus after receiving a formal invitation by the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos.

The Greek Archbishop was warmly welcomed by the Holy Synod and clergy of the Church of Cyprus as well as by people, who gathered outside the Archbishopric to see him.

In his speech at the St. Ioannis Cathedral, Ieronymos said among others that the Church of Greece is at the side of the Church of Cyprus and “We all pray and hope that all religious groups residing on the island will live in peace and show mutual understanding for each other in the future, so that the terrible and tragic incidents of the recent past will never be repeated again”.

According to your-story.com,  Ieronymos expressed his grief for not being able to visit the churches and monasteries in the northern Turkish occupied areas and wished that this will be done in future with the help of God.

Archbishop Chrysostomos commented on the already excellent relations between the two churches and characterized Ieronymos’ visit as supportive and encouraging of the struggle of the Cypriot people for a solution to the Cyprus issue.
