Turkish President Tells Cyprus-EU “Half a Country Leading Miserable Union”

During his official visit to the UK, the Turkish President Abdullah Gül referred to the prospect of Cyprus taking over the rotating presidency of the EU next year as “half a country” leading a “miserable union”.

According to Reuters, the Turkish President said the failure to open new chapters in Turkey’s accession process was harming the reputation of the 27-nation’s union and that it could suffer its biggest loss of credibility in 2012 when Cyprus takes over the rotating EU presidency in July.

Turkey has previously announced that it will protest the EU presidency of Cyprus in July 2012. Gül said Turkey would not participate in any meetings to be chaired by Cyprus but has no problems with continuing to work with the Commission.

The Turkish official also criticised the inability of the Eurozone governments to take bold decisions in order to address the crisis threatening the EU with a collapse.
