Hamburg Hosts Silent Protest March Against Neo-Nazi Killings

After the revelation that three neo-Nazis were behind the murders of 8 Turkish and 1 Greek shop-owners in Germany between 2000 and 2006, members of Hamburg’s Turkish, Greek and Jewish communities joined a massive silent march on November 20 to commemorate the unfortunate victims and protest against the authorities’ failure to solve the cases earlier.

Hamburg’s senator Michael Neumann said Germans have been outraged by the news and are not merely protesting about the victims but are set against the neo-Nazis having attacked their society and way of life.

According to Euronews, the murders have renewed calls for the far-right National Democratic Party (NDP) to be banned. A previous attempt to outlaw the party nearly ten years ago failed and Chancellor Angela Merkel fears a ban would only drive the party underground.

Nevertheless, the German Chancellor has promised to show the matter the proper attention. At the same time, the government wants to establish a new centre to fight an apparent rise of neo-Nazism in Germany.

Police also say they are reopening all unsolved cases with a possible racist motive since 1988.
