20th General Assembly of Association of Balkan News Agencies

On Monday, Delegates of the 20th General Assembly of the Association of the Balkan News Agencies – Southeast Europe (ABNA -SE), organized in the southern coastal town of Limassol by Cyprus News Agency, discussed problems and challenges facing news agencies today.

The Secretary General of the Association of ABNA-SE Maxim Minchev noted that this meeting takes place at a time of heavy financial-and-economic crisis, which concerns all media, and in particular, news-agency business.Minchev stressed that today, 80% of the world-aired information is shared by the news agencies.

Within the assembly a discussion was organized titled “Challenges and Problems of News Agencies”.The list of speakers included Jean-Pierre Gallois, AFP Regional Director for Middle East based in Nicosia, Erik Nylen, Secretary General of European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), Dimitra Letsa, Head of International Relations of ANA-MPA and Korinna Patelis, Assistant Professor in Media Ethics and Regulation of the Department of Communications & Internet Studies of the Cyprus University of Technology.

In his speech, Gallois said, inter alia, that news agencies are today called to adapt to the new environment created by the new technologies and the Internet.

He said that although the ‘citizen journalism’ is not a threat to news agencies in the near future, however, agencies should upgrade their services, utilizing new technologies and maintaining their significant advantage of reliability.
