Island of Hydra Becomes Painting Exhibition Theme in Vienna

With a total of 60 paintings, mostly aquarelles, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) inaugurated the painting exhibition of 12 Austrian artists under the title “Impressions from Hydra” in its premises in Vienna.

The inaugurating event of the exhibition was attended by many representatives from tourist agencies and businesses as well as by many Austrian friends of Greece, Greek Community members and the Chairman of the Foreign Services of the GNTO in Austria Mrs. Calliope Kourousia.

The exhibition will be open to the public until the 9th of December and is dedicated to the memory of the yearlong President of the Austrohellenic Society Mrs. Maria Mavromichali-Botz, whose unexpected death 3 months ago had caused quite a stir in the Greek-Austrian community.

In his greeting speech, the President of the GNTO office in Austria Mr. Panayiotis Skordas praised the overall work of the Austrian artists and stressed how this mirrors their deep love and appreciation towards Greece, and especially towards the island of Hydra.

Mr. Skordas also referred to the rising number of Austrian tourists visiting Greece and underlined that the GNTO in Austria has supported the organization of art and Greek language lessons in Hydra during the past years. “Hydra has hosted many art exhibitions and movie screenings over the past years promoting Greece and its culture abroad” said Mr. Skordas.

The Austrohellenic Society had initiated numerous cultural events dedicated to Greek artists from various artistic fields. The late President Mrs. Mavromichalis-Botz had invited literature, art and music representatives from Greece, Austria and other countries around the world in order to promote Hellenism.

The current exhibition includes 12 Austrian artists, each one of them participating with 5 paintings depicting scenes and impressions form Hydra.
