London Greek Film Festival Pays Tribute to Melina Mercouri

London Greek Film Festival (LGFF) presents a historical documentary, part of the program “Dialogues” with Melina Mercouri, filmed in Cyprus in July 1975, one year after the Turkish invasion (broadcasted for the first time by ET1 on March 6, 1997).

Directed and presented by Melina Mercouri, who visits Cyprus and talks with local people including wives and mothers of missing persons, with officers, and men of the National Guard, with Glafcos Clerides, with a delegate of the Greek Cypriot side at the inter-community, and with Archbishop Makarios III.

The documentary follows the great march of the women to the graves of the victims of the military coup of 15 July 1974 and of the Turkish invasion, which includes a speech by Makarios III.  There are recorded testimonies by Greek Cypriots at the refugee camps, at a down-town street of divided Nicosia, and tours the military base at the industrial area of Sopaz. The documentary has been posted on the website of ERT (www.ert-archives.gr) and the official website of LGFF.
