7th Hellenic-Bavarian Culture Day Held in Munich

What do you get when you mix some quality German beer and a good shoulder of lamb? The Bavarian-Greek Festival of course!  Greeks and Bavarians got together and enjoyed the 7th Hellenic-Bavarian Culture Day, held at the Historical Odeonsplatz in Munich on Sunday.  The event had performances by Greek and Bavarian music and dance groups and traditional dishes following an initiative by Metropolitan of Germany Augustinos and the Munich mayor, Christian Ude.

Munich is home to a large Greek community with about 30,000 Greeks residing in the city, and a total of about 80,000 residing in the state of Bavaria.

Last weekend was the closing ceremony which included speeches by the Mayor Christian Ude and the Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer. Both of them stressed, “that there has developed a good relationship between the Greeks and Bavarian people at all kind of levels”.

The festival included a photo exhibition, Byzantine concert, book presentations and a lot of excellent beer.

On Saturday, there was the unveiling of a monument as a memorial to Meletios Galanopoulos and Damaskinos Chatzopoulos, who were tortured and died in a Nazi military camp in 1943-1945.
