First Modern Greek Language Department in Turkey Celebrates 20 Years

The first Modern Greek Language Department in Turkey completes this year, twenty successful years in operation, under the Language, History and Geography School of Ankara University, founded in the 30’s.
The department of Modern Greek Language and Literature, with its students and scientific and cultural activities, managed to overcome obstacles of nationalism and bring the Hellenic language, literature and culture closer to the Turkish culture, stated Damla Demirozu, in “Apogevmatini” newspaper of Istanbul.  Demirozu is an Assistant Professor at the Modern Greek Studies Department at Ankara University.
Through the establishment of the Department, Turkish citizens interested in studying and obtaining the “neo-Hellenist” expertise, are able to pursue their studies of interest. Therefore, Ms. Demirozu, was transferred to Greece through scholarship funding to study for her Doctorate degree and today, along with Ferhan Kırlıdοkme and İbrahim Kelaga Ahmet, form the Department’s teaching staff.

The aims of the Ankara University Language, History and Geography School, had been defined in the context of the era and as Ms. Demirozu explains, the School has a duty to explore the past and contribute towards the shaping of the country, according to modern criteria.
The Department accepts approximately 30 students on a yearly basis, while successful students are awarded with summer classes offered by the University of Athens, the Institute for Mediterranean Studies and the University of Ioannina. Partnerships within the context of Erasmus Program are also increasing over the recent years.
The Modern Greek Language and Literature Department has also acquired a solid library for graduate students. Graduates from the Department can find employment possibilities, in Ministries (Tourism, Foreign Affairs) and embassies (Turkish or Greek).
