“Onassis” Play Opens at The Novello Theatre, London

Tony Winner Robert Lindsay will play the title role in Martin Sherman’s “ONASSIS”.  The play begins previewing at London’s Novello Theatre on September 30th .Robert Lindsay is not the charming song-and-dance man anymore who won several awards and had played in the 1987 hit Me and My girl. This time he performs the role of the Greek Aristotle Onassis, the man who was married to the world’s most famous woman Jacqueline Kennedythat will be played by Lydia Leonard.Lindsay has performed the roles of Fagin, Cyrano and Richard III and she has played in the television series My Family.  Broadway.com went to the rehearsals of the play and interviewed Robert Lindsay who had played Onassis’ role in the past, on a play under the title Aristo) and supporting act. “I would say it’s almost a completely different play now, or certainly a different approach” Robert Lindsay said. He also revealed that Onassis play might give him the opportunity to return to Broadway: “Well, if I’m going to come back to Broadway, this might be it. There’s a lot of American interest. But I have had other opportunities to go to New York after Me and My Girl. I was asked to go to the Manhattan Theatre Club with The Entertainer and to do Cyrano on Broadway, and there was talk of me taking over from Simon Russell Beale [as King Arthur] in Spamalot.” He stated.

When asked about the after effects of playing Aristotle Onassis, Robert Lindsay said: “Well, you know that Onassis was an alcoholic; he drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney. Let’s just say that I have to have a shower every night. It’s a dirty play.”

ONASSIS” which is set to begin performances next month in the West End, is the story of the last years in the life of Aristotle Onassis, and of his passionate and interwoven relationships with Jackie Kennedy and Maria Callas and his son Alexandros. Based on material from Peter Evans’ book “Nemesis”, “ONASSIS” is an explosive account of how those in positions of enormous power and wealth often live lives detached from the realities and moral codes of everyday existence. The cast will also include Tom Austen, Liz Crowther, Ben Grove, Robert Hastie, John Hodgkinson, Sue Kelvin, Graeme Taylor and Gawn Grainger.

“ONASSIS” will open at the Novello Theatre on Tuesday,  October 12th following previews from Thursday the 30th of September 2010. The limited London season will finish on Saturday, February 5th 2011. “ONASSIS” will also feature Anna Francolini as Maria Callas.
