Dr. Antoniou Leads Research Team on Important Breast Cancer Findings

Under Antonis Antoniou’s guidance, an international group of scientists identified a region of the genetic code which can increase or decrease the high breast cancer risk associated with the BRCA1 gene. Antonis Antoniou is a researcher  for  the United Kingdom Genetic Epidemiology Unit at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge.

Researchers found that the region is particularly involved in oestrogen receptor negative breast cancer and has also  been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer in the general population. Dr. Antonis Antoniou and his group identified this specific region after searching through the genomes of more than 2.300 women with faults in the BARCA1 gene.  This was to find other regions of the genetic code which could alter breast cancer risks. Dr. Antoniou said that his team has found a section of the genetic code which acts as a volume control to turn up or down the risk of breast cancer under development from faults in the BRCA1 gene. This research is extremely important as it can provide doctors with better tools to see who is at risk as well as to help them find the best treatment.
