Greek Orthodox Tavelers Visit The Sumela Monastery, Turkey

The Daily News states that many Orthodox tourists will visit Turkey’s Black Sea provinces of Trabzon, Ordu and Samsun. The visitors plan to attend the Virgin Mary service that will be led on August 15th by the Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomeos at the ancient Sümela Monastery.  The Monastery sits at the foot of a steep cliff in the Trabzon province. Volokolamsk Metropolitan Ilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church and Drama Metropolitan Pavlos of the Greek Orthodox Church will participate in the ceremony along with Patriarch Bartholomeos.

One charter flight from Thessaloniki and one from Russia are scheduled to fly to Trabzon on the day of the service, which is being held with special permission from The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry. Additionally many buses from several regions in Greece are also set to travel to Sümela on August 10th, while prominent Pontian Greeks are expected to travel to Trabzon via private jet. Organizers in Greece are warning travelers to be respectful and calm and to avoid actions that would harm the religious atmosphere; as the date for the service falls within Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims.
