THE long-awaited trial of television presenter Elena Skordelli, one of three charged with the murder of media owner Andis Hadjicostis, opened yesterday in an overcrowded Nicosia courthouse.
Friends and relatives of both the defendants’ and the victim’s family packed the Nicosia criminal court, taking over many of the seats reserved for journalists and spilling outside into the hall.
The hearing was also attended by Hadjicostis’ mother Toulla who shed tears at times during the proceedings.
Day one of the trial started with the submission to the court of facts that are acceptable for both the prosecution and the defence.
These concern the acquisition of shares in the television station formerly controlled by Hadjicostis.
