Greeks in Germany: 50 years migration

“1960-2010, fifty years of Greeks in Germany – a success story of two nations” is the title of the celebration event, which is being organized in Bonn on May 2nd in the former Hall of the Parliament (Plenarsaal), by the Federation of Greek Communities of Germany (OEK), the German – Hellenic Business Association (DHW) and the Association of German – Greek Companies (VDGG).
The event, held on the occasion of signing the agreement for the employment of workers, between Germany and Greece, in late March of 1960, under the auspices of the Federal President of Germany, Horst Kohler, the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitrios Christophias.
“We invite you to celebrate together this anniversary, in particularly difficult times”, is stated in a joint announcement of the three bodies. “Keeping in mind many criticisms and inaccurate publications of the last few weeks for Greece and Greeks, let us think, both Greeks and Germans, how we will proceed together in the future constructively in a Europe which is being integrated in an increasingly faster pace”.
The opening of the event will be announced by Costas Demetriou, President of the Federation of Greek Communities in Germany, and Dr. Sigrid Skarpelis – Sperk, President of the Association of German – Greek Companies.

The Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Phillipos Petsalnikos, the Vice-Chancellor of Germany and Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle and the Greek origin President of the German Union of Mining, Chemicals and Energy, Michalis Vassiliadis, have been invited at the event to make speeches.
Keynote speaker for the event, will be the Minister of Integration of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, who is also supporting the event.
Greetings will be addressed by the Metropolitan of Germany and Exarch of Central Europe, Avgoustinos, the Vice President of the Evangelical Diaconate, Dr. Wolfgang Teske, the President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Stefanos P. Tamvakis.
The event will be concluded with the formulation of conclusions by Georgios Chatzimarakis, MEP and the President of the German – Hellenic Business Association (DHW)
