Health Authorities on Alert as Deadly Flu Claims 14 Lives in Greece

Greece’s health authorities are on alert as 14 people have died of flu complications this winter, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) said on Friday.
The particular flu virus seems lethal for older people, as all victims were 58-91 years old with only three of them inoculated. The flu virus that prevails this season is the type A (H3N2) virus that usually causes serious illness to the elderly, according to KEELPNO.
Epidemiologists urge people, especially patients suffering from chronic illnesses, to get vaccinated. They say that Greece is now entering the main phase of the flu outbreak.
They also advise the public to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid contracting the virus.
Since October, until January 15, KEELPNO has recorded 90 serious cases of influenza, with 85 of the flu patients having been treated in intensive care units.
Greece recorded 80 deaths from implications of flu virus strains in 2016 and more than 100 in 2015.
