“Friendship between the U.K. and Greece is stronger today than it ever has been,” British Prime Minister Theresa May has said ahead of her meeting with Greek premier Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday in London.

“I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Tsipras to Downing Street next week for what will be his first bilateral visit since his inauguration,” May told Greek newspaper Ta Nea, adding that “the visit is a demonstration of the strong historic links between our two countries, and the deep co-operation we enjoy today”.

“And this is a relationship that continues to go from strength-to-strength, with last month’s visit of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to Athens and Crete underlining the close bond between our two peoples.”

“Our friendship goes back centuries and is stronger today than it ever has been. Millions of British citizens travel to Greece every year to enjoy the unique hospitality and culture of your cities, coastline and people.

“Our security forces work together through NATO and the EU to keep our people safe and we are important trading partners,”  May said.

She added that “Prime Minister Tsipras’ visit will give us a chance to further strengthen the bonds we share in all of these areas for the benefit of all our citizens.”
