Prinkipo Greek Orphanage, Istanbul

A Greek orphanage on the Princes’ Islands of Istanbul has been included on a shortlist of seven of Europe’s most endangered heritage sites.

The Prinkipo Greek Orphanage, built in 1899 and one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, closed in 1964.

Since its closure its condition has deteriorated, particularly after a fire in 1980. Europa Nostra — a heritage foundation — now warning that parts of it are at risk of immediate collapse.

The organization says recommendations by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate to restore the building as an environmental and ecumenical center could be the best future for the endangered building.
