EU: Albania and FYROM Deserve to be Part of Expanded EU

The European Commission will propose to the Member States, probably by summer, the start of accession talks with Albania and FYROM, said Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations.

Hahn talked to German newspaper Die Welt saying that, “The citizens of these countries deserve this particular European perspective. We believe that both countries have implemented important reforms in the past and thus have the right to such a step.”
“For example,” Hahn explained, “Albania has made great strides in the fight against organized crime.”
As far as Turkey is concerned, the Commissioner said that the EU welcomes the release of the Turkish-born German correspondent of Die Welt who has held by Turkish authorities.

However, he said, the EU believes that, despite the constitutional status of Turkey, there are substantial deficiencies in practice.

“There are thousands of prisoners, many without indictment. We can not close our eyes to serious shortcomings in respecting the principles of the rule of law,” Hahn said.
