Migrants Drown Near Greek Border

Turkish aid groups have said at least three people — including two children — lost their lives close to the Greek border when their refugee boat overturned on the Evros River.

Four people are missing and an eighth crossed into Greece, according to Turkey’s AFAD humanitarian organization.

The craft capsized in Turkey’s Edirne province early on Tuesday and shouts from its occupants alerted local residents.

Although most refugees and migrants attempt to reach Greece via the sea — with FRONTEX on Tuesday saying refugee arrivals were down in January — many still try to make the dangerous journey overland by crossing fast-moving, freezing rivers from Turkey.
