Eddie O’Hara, former Merseyside MP and British university lecturer, died at the age of 78 on May 28 after suffering from chronic respiratory problems. He will be remembered for his commitment to the British campaign championing the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
O’Hara became chairman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles in 2010. He had penned a strong response to the British Museum’s claim that the sculptures were a significant part of the Museum’s story of cultural achievement throughout the world. “The price of this is the compromise of the integrity of a pre-eminent work of art,” O’Hara responded.
He leaves behind a wife and three children from his previous marriage.
