Greek Violinist Leonidas Kavakos Receives Prestigious Music Award [video]

The outstanding Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos will be receiving the Leonie Sonning Music Prize in Copenhagen, Denmark in January 2017.

This prestigious award, is essentially awarded to internationally recognized composers, instrumentalists, conductor or singers since 1959. Among the winners of this award are Simon Rattle, John Eliot Gardiner, Pierre Boulez, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Miles Davis, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Benjamin Britten and Leonard Bernstein.

Kavakos, is also a conductor who has served as the artistic director of the Camerata Salzburg following Roger Norrington and guest conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The 48-year-old violinist will also be performing the Violin Concerto in D by Johannes Brahms, in Copenhagen.

Brahms’ great masterpiece from 1878 is one of the staples of Romantic violin literature.
