An unofficial summit among the interior and justice ministers of European Union‘s 28 member states decided on Friday to increase the protection of the union’s external borders amid intensifying security threats since the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13.
The ministers decided that they will begin enforcing certain alterations to the Schengen Area agreement so that European Union citizens can be processed just like citizens of non- Shengen countries at the area’s external borders, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. They also asked that changes to the agreement be officially made soon.
The Islamic State has made threats against other European states, such as Italy, since the attacks. With the attacks’ suspected mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud gunned down in Paris, questions have arisen over how he was able to reach Europe and get into France undetected.
The summit’s ministers also agreed on widespread gun control across the EU and the creation of a database that will include all the passengers who travel on planes in the European Union.
European Commissioner for Migration, Citizenship, and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos also supported the creation of a European Intelligence Agency in a press conference following the meeting.
