German Magazine Süddeutsche Zeitung Features Greek Artist to Aid in Refugee Crisis

As the civil war rages in Syria and thousands of people arrive in Greece on a daily basis in search of a better life and a brighter future, Greek artist Stelios Faitakis created a painting about the refugee crisis, titled “The New Wave.”

In collaboration with the gallery The Breeder, Faitakis created a multi-project, called “The New Wave, 2015, Inkjet”. All sales and proceeds received from the project will be given to the Red Cross to care for Syrian refugees arriving on the Greek island of Chios daily.

The artist has developed into one of the most politically conscious Greek artists of this generation and is influenced by Mexican mural painting, Byzantine religious iconography, and Japanese art. Faitakis’s art has been discussed on an international level but he first started his career as a graffiti artist, designing saints who wore gas masks.

The “The New Wave” is expected to become the cover of issue 46 (November) of Süddeutsche Zeitung’s magazine.
